Shane 3-1 Celts

The game reflected our weaker squad against a full strength Shane team… we were defensive against their most expansive game.

Our plan to sit back in our half and deny them space between the Midfield and Defence worked well after we worked out what to do; basically the plan was to get to half-time at 0-0 when they were going to lose their best two players and then change to a more attacking formation in the second half and frustrate them into making mistakes.

Initially we did really well with the centre midfielders working tirelessly to deny space to the Shane midfielder and Kearney and Perry limiting the opposition to long shots, which Nick comfortably took care of. The defining moment of the match was a Shane corner, when it was flicked to the back post and Gerry was left unmarked and he had about 5 seconds to hit a very accomplished volley into the net – the goal of the match… Their second goal quickly followed from another corner that was cleared but one defender forgot to push out allowing Tom Clarke to stroll into the box and remain onside and volley a good goal. We never really threatened that much in the 1st half but as we planned sometimes they over-committed and we had several breakaway chances that we would have done better if our actual strikers were available. Thankfully the half-time whistle came with Shane looking for a third and we could try to compose ourselves again for the 2nd half.

We started the second half started with a change in formation to 4-4-2. Obviously the Celts forgot about marking again at a corner as Uwe scored a tap-in from a flat miss-hit corner in the centre of the goal to make it 3-0 Shane. However, the Celts started threatening more and enjoyed more possession and went close with a few breaks into the box. Tim sent a wicked corner into the box which Edwards (OG) glanced into the net to make it 3-1. Although we had some chances in the second half and maybe could have and should have got a second, Shane deservedly won the game for a strong 1st half and showing what a dangerous set-piece team they are. I thought the centre backs were excellent for us, and also the two John’s in CM, and Tim in the 2nd half when his hangover passed. Our MoM goes to Cormac for his raids down the right in the 2nd half and also to Nick who was excellent in goal. Their MoM was probably Gerry for his set-piece deliveries, great crosses and fine goal. Also little Zac gets a mention for an audacious 'Zola like' flick from a corner that was only denied by a great save from Nick.
